  Sergeants Institute crowned Callaghan Cup champions

Calcutta Police Sergeants’ Institute emerged champions in the Callaghan Cup All-India Division-II Rugby Football Tournament, which was hosted by Odisha Rugby Football Association (ORFA) for the first time at Barabati Stadium here from December 9 to 13. Sergeants’ Institute beat Mumbai Magician in the final by 20-9 points.

Altogether 12 teams, consisting of around 300 players participated in the five-day tournament. Of the two Odisha teams in the fray, Bhubaneswar-based Kalinga Institute of Social Science (KISS) finished seventh, defeating Jammu & Kashmir 19-18.

ORFA president and Bhubaneswar (North) MLA Priyadarshi Mishra handed over the trophy in the closing function. Former State Assistant Sports Director Ashok Mohanty, ORFA vice-president Rajeev Sahu, secretary Upendra Kumar Mohanty, coordinater Swakhyar Mohanty and Rugby India assistant coach Manas Kumar Jena were present on the occasion.

CRPF beat KISS 29-17. Match No 2: Mumbai Magiciant beat Kalinga Rugby Club 64-0. Match No 3: Delhi Lions beat Jammu & Kashmir 44-0. Match No 4: Sergeants’ Institute beat Rajasthan 71-0.
Dec 10: Match No 5: CRPF beat Bihar 51-0. Match No 6: Mumbai Magicians beat Tamil Nadu 31-0. Match No 7: Jammu & Kashmit beat Chhattisgarh 34-0. Match No 8: Delhi Rebels beat Rajasthan 72-0.
Dec 11: Match No 9: KISS beat Bihar 25-0. Match No 10: Tamil Nadu beat Kalinga Rugby Club 29-0. Match No 11: Delhi Lions beat Chhattisgarh 69-0. Match No 12: Sergeants’ Institute beat Delhi Rebels 29-0.
Dec 12: Match No 13 (Plate SF): Delhi Rebels beat KISS 25-5. Match No 14 (Plate SF): Tamil Nadu beat Jammu & Kashmir 29-0. Match No 15 (Cup SF): Sergeants’ Institute beat CRPF 21-3. Match No 16 (Cup SF): Mumbai Magicians beat Delhi Lions 21-0.
