MPS boys, Unit-IV girls win ASM Inter-School basketball titles
16 Dec 2015 BHUBANESWAR

Mother’s Pub lic School (MPS) boys and Unit-IV High School girls emerged champions in the Akram- Snehasish Memorial 5th Inter-School Basketball Tournament here at the floodlit Unit-I Basketball Complex today.

Riding on Anurag Panda’s sparkling contribution of 36 points, MPS beat Unit-IX Boys’ High School 86-63 in the keenly-contested boys’ final. Manas Ranjan Das with 22 points was the top-scorer for the Unit-IX High School. Despite being packed with well-trained Government Sports Hostel players, Unit-IX team went down in the final as they failed to transform their plans into action. Sahid Nagar High School finished third, defeating KIIT International School 30-21.

Girls’ final proved to be a lop-sided affair with Unit-IV Girls’ High School team, comprising Sports Hostel trainees, outclashed Mother’s Public School 39-17. The third placed was secured by Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), who beat KIIT International School 20-12.

The five-day tournament, featuring 11 boys’ and seven girls’ teams, brought a good number of young talents to the fore. One among them was Shasank Bhanjadeo, a Standard VI student of Mother’s Public School. The lanky boy drew the maximum applaud from the crowd in the final despite entering the court in the dying minutes and missing the basket thrice by a whisker. KISS girl Kajuri Mallick and Sahid Nagar High School boy Prasant Behera were adjudged most promising players of the tournament.

Host Khurda District Basketball Association (KDBA) president and State Food and Civil Supply Secretary Madhusudan Padhi handed over the trophies at the presentation ceremony. Bhubaneswar (Central) MLA Bijay Kumar Mohanty, MPS Principal Poly Patnaik, eminent coach Nila Madhab Deo and KDBA secretary Prasanta Nayak were present on the occasion.
