Sahoos reign supreme in 5th State Shooting Championship
15 Nov 2015 BHUBANESWAR

For Sahoo family of Talcher, shooting has been passion for around 50 years. Starting from Late Sarat Kumar Sahoo to Prachesu Sahoo, the family has produced three generations of shooters. They have their own shooting range at home and spend lot of time, energy and money in sharpening their skills.

Prakash Chandra Sahoo, the present head of the family, once even beat a black commando in a shooting competition at Talcher Rifle Club. It is a different matter that no one from the family has been able to win a national medal yet. In fact, winning medals was never a prime goal for Sahoos till the reconstituted Odisha Rifle Association (ORA) started conducting the state championship from 2010. Since then, winning medals in state level competitions has become a habit for them.

Continuing their hegemony, six members of the family bagged a total of 16 medals, including six gold and as many silver in the 5th edition of the State Shooting Championship, which commenced here at the newly built Govt Shooting Range in Kalinga Stadium on Nov 12 and concluded at Utkal Karate School indoor range today.

Prachesu was most successful among the lot, pocketing three gold and two silver medals in women`s events. Prakash, Palash, Matru Prasad, Pragyanshu, Pratesu were the other five medallists of the family. ``Interest for shooting has been growing fast after the revival of ORA. Younger shooters of our family are now aiming to win national medal within next two years,`` said Prakash.

Another shooter to achieve notable success in the four-day championship was Lipsa Sethi of Utkal Karate School, bagging two gold and one silver inĀ  women`s group. State Panchayati Raj Minister Arun Kumar Sahoo handed over the prizes in the presence of ORA secretary Hari Prasad Pattanayak. International shooter Nigam Parida was felicitated on the occasion.
