  Smaraki, Kiran, Baivab win Commonwealth chess medals

Three players from Odisha bagged one medal each in the Commonwealth Chess Championship, which was held at Waskaduwa in Sri Lanka from July 30 to August 7. They were Smaraki Mohanty (Kendrapara), WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty (Bhubaneswar) and Baivab Mishra (Puri).

Smaraki won the gold medal in under-18 girls’ category, scoring 5.5 points out of a possible nine. Kiran and Baivab claimed bronze medals in women’s and under-20 boys’ sections respectively.

All Odisha Chess Association treasurer Gobinda Chandra Mohapatra did duty as the head of the Indian squad. A 65-member Indian contingent achieved outstanding success in the eight-day championship, bagging 28 medals out of possible 49.

 

Host Sri Lanka also did a great job, winning 15 medals. A total of 350 players from 10 countries participated in this event which was organized in the grand manner at Citrus Waskaduwa, the beautiful resort Hotel.
