Odisha Cricket Association secretary Asirbad Behera received the newly introduced award for `Best Contribution to Promotion of Sports and Games`, while the award for `Excellence in Sports Journalism’ went to Tanmay Das. The duo was given Rs 50,000 each. The award for `Lifetime Achievement in Promotion of Sports & Games’ was skipped for the year as the Sports Department found no deserving candidate for the purpose.
The six Olympians _ women hockey players Deep Grace Ekka, Namita Toppo, Lilima Minz, Sunita Lakra and women sprinters Dutee Chand and Srabani Nanda _ were also felicitated on the occasion with cash incentives of Rs 5 lakh each. Dutee’s coach Nagapuri Ramesh and Srabani’s coach Tarun Kumar Saha were also felicitated with a purse of Rs 1 lakh each. In the absence of Ramesh, Dutee received the cheque on his behalf.
Promising girl Pratyasha Ray, who recently became the first swimmer from Odisha to win a gold medal in National championship, was rewarded with a cash incentive of Rs 1.70 lakh. Buju Patnaik bravery and youth awards were also given away on the occasion.
Sports Minister Sudarm Marndi, Handloom & Textile Minister Snehangini Chhuria, Development Commissioner R Balakrishnan and Sports Secretary Saswat Mishra were present in the award function, which coincided with National Sports Day.
Earlier, fingers were pointed pointed at the decision of the Sports Department for choosing Asirbad Behera and Tanmay Das for the Biju Patnaik Award. Demands were made by people and organizations to exclude the two controversial persons from the list of awardees. Odisha Vikash Parishad staged demonstration against the duo in front of Ram Mandir here on August 26, the report of which was published in leading daily `Dharitri’.
