  Odisha flatter to deceive in Junior Girls NFC

Despite being the host and last year’s runners-up, Odisha crashed out in the in the semifinals,  losing to Haryana by a solitary goal in the Junior (U-19) Girls National Football Championship, which was held here at Barabati Stadium and Reserve Police Ground from July 1 to 17.

Defending champions Manipur retained the title, defeating Haryana in the final by 4-1 goals today. Odisha Sports Minister Sudam Marndi, Odisha Cricket Association secretary Asirbad Behra, Football Association of Odisha president Debashish Samantaray and secrtary Sanjay Behera handed over the trophy and medals in the closing function.

 

Odisha played a total of six matches in the championship, won four and lost two. Led by Anima Malik, Odisha earlier mauled Uttar Pradesh 10-0 and Andhra Pradesh 25-0 in Group-A league to book berth in the quarterfinals, where they beat Goa 2-0 and Jharkhand 1-0, but lost to Manipur 0-3.

Altogether 22 states participated in the championship, which was hosted by Football Association of Odisha (FAO). A budget of Rs 50 lakh had been estimated for the staging of the championship, which featured a total of 39 matches.
