Kabir clinches double crown @ Odisha Open
13 Nov 2016 Team Orisports

Promising local lad Kabir Hans bagged a creditable double by winning both the men’s singles and mixed doubles titles in the 10th Major Sandeep Mohapatra Memorial Odisha Open Tennis Tournament, which was organised by Khurda District Tennis Association (KDTA) here at Bhubaneswar Club from November 11 to 13.

A rapidly-improving Kabir clinched the double crown by upstaging stalwart Satirtha Patnaik 6-2, 6-1 in the lop-sided men’s singles summit clash. Earlier in the mixed double final, Kabir and Rutuparna Choudhury prevailed over Aditya Satpathy and Ameek Kiran Batth 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

The men’s doubles title was pocketed by Santosh Mallick and Vivek Tibarewal, while Sunil Palai and Lalit Dash finished runners-up. Former Odisha cricket captain Pravanjan Mullick and Jhadeswar Das emerged champions in 45-plus senior men’s doubles category. But the Mullick’s victory kicked up a controversy as he was alleged to have fudged his age.

Biranchi Mohanty and Nihar Ray captured the top honour in 55-plus senior men’s doubles category, while title in 65-plus men’s doubles event was won by Pramod Kumar Patnaik and Gyana Ranjan Das. Kabir received a total cash prize of Rs 18,500, while his mixed doubles partner Ruruparna was given Rs 3,500.

The men’s doubles champions became richer by Rs 8,000, while the runners-up took home Rs 4,000. Title winners in all three senior men’s doubles events were given Rs 7,000 each and the runners-up Rs 3,500 each. State Development Commissioner R Balakrishnan handed over the trophy and cash prizes in the closing ceremony. State Home Secretary Asit Kumar Tripathy, KDTA president Madhusudan Padhi, secretary Asit Pradhan and tournament referee Jatin Batsya were present on the occasion.
