  Prasanna lifts K D Pillai Memorial Trophy

Tamil Nadu teenager S Prasanna emerged champion in the K D Pillai Memorial All-India Open Fide Rating Chess Tournament, which was organised by All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA) here at KIIT University Indoor Stadium from November 20 to 25, 2016. He scored 10 points out of possible 11 to take home the top prize of Rs 21,000.

Odisha lad Baivab Mishra finished runner-up with nine points and received a cash prize of Rs 12,000. Mishra, who hails from Puri, won eight games, drew two and lost one to S Prasanna. Students of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) put up impressive performance in this tournament, bagging three positions among top 20 finishers.

Tapan Badamundi secured seventh place, while Purno Khillo and Sajan Kumar Nayak ended 15th and 20th respectively. The tournament, which carried a total prize fund of Rs 1 lakh, attracted as many as 102 players from six states (Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha and Tamil Nadu).

 

Income Tax Additional Commisssioner, K K Nath inaugurated the tournament in the presence of Nandita Pillai, daughter of Late K D Pillai. KIIT University Registrar Prof Sasmita Samanta graced the closing function as chief guest and handed over the trophies. Union Bank Deputy Regional Head (Bhubaneswar), Arun Kumar Nayak, AOCA president Sekhar Chandra Sahu, secretary K K Sarma, chief arbiter Suresh Chandra Sahoo and Late KD Pillai’s sister Sarada Juardar were present on the occasion.
