Amrit, Preet power Odisha U-19 team to innings win
30 Nov 2016 CUTTACK

A brilliant century by Amrit Khatua and a career-best haul of seven-wicket haul by pace bowler Preet Kanwar Singh Chohan powered host Odisha to an innings and 48-run win over Chhattisgarh on the penultimate day of their four-day Cooch Behar Trophy U-19 Group-C match here at Ravenshaw University Ground today.

Trailing by 150 runs in the first innings, Chhattisgarh were bowled out for 102 in the second essay to lose the match with more than a day to spare. Bhubaneswar lad Chohan, who picked up two wickets in the first innings, finished with a match haul of nine for 64. He formed a deadly combination with fellow pacer Umesh Yadav, who returned with a match haul of five for 83.

This was the first win in three matches for Odisha, who gained seven points and increased their tally to eight points. They will next meet Baroda at home venue from December 5 to 8.

Earlier, riding on a brilliant knock of 136 by Amrit Khatua, Odisha mustered a strong total of 297, in reply to 147 by Chhattisgarh. At one stage, Odisha were in a spot of bother, losing seven wickets for 168 runs. But Khatua and Krishna Palai steadied the innings with a partnership of 104 runs for the eighth wicket. Son of former Odisha allrounder Abinash Khatua, Amrit hit 21 boundaries, while Krishna was run out for 50, which included eight hits to the fence. R Taank was most successful bowler for Chhattisgarh, taking four wickets for 67 runs.

Put into bat by Odisha captain Satyajit Sabat, the Chhattisgarh boys struggled from the beginning, losing wickets in regular intervals. At the lunch break, they were in deep trouble with five wickets down for 66 runs on the board. The visitor failed to make any noticeable recovery after the break and were eventually bowled out for a low total. Odisha new-ball bowlers Umesh Yadav and Preet Singh Chohan put up impressive performance, bagging four and two wickets respectively.
