  India win bronze in Unified Football Tournament

India beat Bangladesh 1-0 to win the bronze medal in the Special Olympics Inter Regional Unified Football Tournament, which concluded here at KIIT Cricket Stadium today. With this win India also avenged their 0-1 defeat in the league match against Bangladesh earlier on the opening day.

In their other two games, India came from behind to hold Thailand to 1-1 draw and then squandered a 1-0 lead to go down to Korea 1-2. India goalkeeper Lara was cynosure of all eyes, making a number of spectacular saves.

 

Thailand beat Korea 1-0 in the final to win gold. In their other two league matches, Thailand defeated Banglades 2-1 and held Korea to 1-1 draw. The game between Korea and Bangladesh ended in goalless draw. Korea won the silver medal, while Bangladesh finished fourth.

Krushna Chandra Mahanta, Birendra Mahanta (both Keonjhar), Ranjit Keshari Nayak (Nimapada), Trinath Samal (Sonepur) officiated in matches in the tournament as referees. Gitanjali Khuntia, a former state player and coach, was awarded with refereeship, the first woman from Odisha to do so in an International match of Special Olympics.

The off-beat tournament was inaugurated by Tourism and Culture Department Principal Secretary Arati Ahuja in the presence of KIIT University Registrar Prof Sasmita Samanta, SOB National Director Mukta Narayan and National Director Victor Vaz.

State Sports Director Ananta Kishore Jena, KIIT University vice-chancellor Prof P P Mathur, KIIT & KISS secretary R N Dash, Spcial Olympics International Sports & Development director Cristian Guiralt, international referee Calvin Stacy and Special Olympics Bharat National Sports Director Victor Vaz handed over the medals and ribbons. Special Olympics Bharat-Odisha Committee vice-president Dr Pratap K Rath and Special Olympics Bharat-Odisha area director Prakash K Rath was present on the occasion.
