  Odisha eves help India win silver in Asian Rugby 7s Trophy

A 12-member Indian team, featuring six from Odisha, won the silver medal in the Asian Women’s Rugby Seven Trophy, which was held at Vientiane in Laos on February 17 and 18, 2017. The six Odisha women were: Subhalaxmi Barik, Laxmipriya Sahoo, Sanjukta Munda, Meerarani Hembram, Hupi Majhi and Bhagyalaxmi Barik.

Altogether seven countries participated in the tournament, which was conducted in round-robin format. India beat Laos 22-7, Philippines 12-5, Nepal 43-0 and Malaysia 26-12 on the opening day. They continued their winning run by blanking Pakistan 5-0 on the concluding day. But Indian eves eventually finished runners-up, losing to South Korea 0-29 in their last league game.

 

Odisha lass Hupi Majhi secured a place among top three try scorers, while her statemate Meerarani Hembram was the third highest in conversions. Former India captain Nasser Hussian accompanied the Indian women`s team as coach. Namita Madhu, Priya Baisla, Ruchi Shetty, Neha Sinandi, Vahbiz Bharucha and Neha Pardeshi.
