  Amiya, Dutee, Srabani corner glory in Federation Cup

Odisha trio Amiya Mallick, Dutee Chand and Srabani Nanda asserted supremacy in the sprint events of the 21st Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championships, which concluded at NS-NIS in Patiala today. Odisha bagged a total of eight medals in the four-day championship. The medals include four gold and as many silver.

Bhubaneswar lad Amiya was most successful of the trio, bagging men’s 100 and 200 metre sprint double, clocking 10.51 and 21.22 seconds respectively. The women’s sprint events witnessed healthy competition between Olympians Dutee and Srabani and ended with the duo sharing the top honours.

Srabani first won the 200m gold, clocking 23.57 seconds, while Dutee settled contended herself with silver, finishing second with a timing of 23.60seconds. But Dutee avenged her 200m defeat by capturing the 100m title ahead of Srabani, who settled with the silver. The former clocked 11.48 seconds and the latter 11.57 seconds.

 

The other two silver medals for Odisha were secured by Janua Murmu and Purnima Hembram in women’s 400m hurdles and heptathlon respectively. Jauna clocked 57.51 seconds to break the old meet record of 57.60 seconds, set by statemate Sahebani Oram at Chennai in 2002. But Anu Raghavan performed better than Jauna and pocketed the gold with a timing of 57.39 seconds. Purnima finished second in heptathlon with a total of 5632 points.

Overall, the championship produced three new National and four Meet Records. Odisha woman hammer thrower Sarita Singh, who represented Uttar Pradesh in this championship, won the gold medal wiith a new National Record of 65.25m, eclipseing the previous national record of 62.74m set by Manju Bala in 2014.

As many as five athletes bagged a double. G Lakshmanan and his sister L Suriya won both the 10000m and 5000m titles in respective sections. They were joined by Nayana James who claimed gold medals in women’s 100m hurdles and the long jump events. Amoj Jacob, only 19, bagged a men’s 400-800m double.

NEW NATIONAL RECORDS:
#   Women`s Javelin throw: Annu Rani, Uttar Pradesh (61.86m. He broke her own national record of 60.01m and qualified for the World Championships in London).
#   Women’s hammer throw: Sarita Singh, Uttar Pradesh (65.25m. Eclipsed the previous national record of 62.74m set by Manju Bala in 2014).
#   Men’s pole vault: S Siva, Tamil Nadu (5.14m. Broke the previous National record of 5.13m, set by MP Bimin in 2012 at Jabalpur).

NEW MEET RECORDS:
%   Women’s 400m: Nirmala Devi, Haryana (51.28s. Broke the old meet record of 51.81s held by KM Beenamol since 2002. Nirmala also qualified for the World Championships).
%   Men’s Javelin: Neeraj Chopra, Haryana (85.63m. He eclipsed Devender Singh’s mark of 79.65m recorded in Mangalore in 2015. Also qualified for the World Championships).
%   Women’s shot Put: Manpreet Kaur, Punjab (17.04m. Smashed the previous meet mark of  16.94 set by Harbans Kaur in Chennai in 1997).
%   Women’s 400m: Anu Raghavan, Kerala (57.39s. Eclipsed the previous record of 57.60s, set by Sahebani Oram in 2002 at Chennai).
