  Manish, Sairupa win State U-11 chess titles

Bbhuaneswar boy Manish Kumar and Cuttack girl P Sairupa emerged champions in the Odisha State Under-11 Chess Championship, which was organised joinly by S R Chess Centre and Ravenshaw University at Ravenshaw University Convention Centre in Cuttack from October 2 to 4, 2017.

As many as 130 players participated in the open category, while 69 vied for honours in girls’ section of the seven-round tournament. Manish won all of his games to take the open title with seven points. Sairupa won six games and drew one to top the table with 6.5 points in girls’ competition.
 

Harshit Ranjan Sahu and Suhana Jena finished runner-up in open and girls’ sections respectively. Top two finishers in both the categories qualified to represent Odisha in the National U-11 Chess Championship, scheduled to be held at Pune from November 22 to 30, 2017.

Utkal Karate School founder Hari Prasad Pattanaik gave away the prizes in the presence of Odhsia Grand Master Debashis Das, SR Chess Centre Director SR Pattnaik and president Subasis Pattanaik. Senior sports journalist Sanjib Biswal, chess International Master Mohhapatra and chess coach Rajendra Prasad Sahoo were felicitated on the occasion.
