Senapati, Dhuper shine in drawn Ranji match vs Baroda
20 Nov 2017 BHUBANESWAR

A career-best knock of 173 by Subhranshu Senapati and a half-century each by Rajesh Dhuper and Biplab Samantaray helped Odisha draw their four-day Ranji Trophy Group-C match against Baroda at Reliance Cricket Stadium in Vadodara (Gujarat) today. But host Baroda gathered three points by virtue of taking first-innings lead, while Odisha settled with one point.

Odisha conceded a 58-run first-innings lead by getting all out for 445, in reply to a huge total of 503 by Baroda. The home team were 259 for one in their second innings when the fourth day’s play came to an end. In the second innings, Aditya Waghmode and Deepak Hooda scored an unbeaten century each, while Vishnu Solanki hit a half-century.

Odisha brightened their chances of taking first-innnings lead as they progressed 422 for five after resuming at the overnight score of 316 for five. But the opportunity went a-begging as the last five wickets fell for only 23 runs. The collapse of the lower-half of the innings stared with the dismissal of Senapati, who hit 22 boundaries in his majestic 395-ball knock. Before his exit, Senapati put on 150 runs for the sixth-wicket partnership with Dhuper. This was the second first-class century for the Keonjhar batsman, who was adjudged the player of the match.

Wicket-keeper Dhuper cemented his place in the team with a 179-ball 86, which included eight boundaries and three sixes. This was the second first-class fifty for Dhuper, following memorable 97 against Tamil Nadu at DRIEMS Ground, Tangi, Cuttack earlier this month.

Odisha started their firset-innings with a jolt as opener Natraj Behera got out without adding to his overnight score of 24. But Senapati and Shantanu Mishra steadied the innings with a 103-run partnership for the fourth wicket. After Misha was dismissed for 46, Senapati and Samantaray bolstered the innings, putting on 105 runs in their fifth-wicket stand. But after notching his 16th first-class fifty and third in a row, Samantaray was dismissed for 55.

Earlier, Baroda mustered the massive total thanks to Kedar Devdhar, Vishun Solanki and Ninad Rathwa hitting a century each. Solanki and Rathwa compiled 155 runs for the eighth wicket partnership to put home team in a commanding position.

Odisha vice-captain Basant Mohanty was most successful bowler for Odisha, bagging five wickets for 85 runs. This was the 17th five-wicket haul for senior pacer Mohanty in first-class cricket. Odisha will play their sixth and last league match against Madhya Pradesh at Indore from November 25.
