Dutee wins 100m gold with Meet and Natl marks
29 Jun 2018 BHUBANESWAR

Odisha ace Dutee Chand justified her reputation as the fastest woman of the country by winning the 100 metre gold medal with both Meet and National Records in the 58th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championship, which concluded at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati today. She also qualified for the Jakartak Asian Games in this event.

Dutee first broke the National Record, clocking 11.29 seconds in the semifinals, erasing the previous record of 11.30 seconds, which had also been set by her last year at New Delhi. The Odisha sprinter followed her sterling performance with a Meet Record of the 11.32 seconds in the final, which fetched her the gold.

In the process, Dutee eclipsed the previous Meet Mark of 11.39 seconds, achieved by Shradha Narayanan at Lucknow in 2014. This was the second medal for Dutee, who had won siver in 200 metre sprint earlier on the second day of the four-day meet. However, Srabani Nanda, the other star sprinter of Odisha, could not compete in the 100 metre final due to injury.

The final day of the championship proved to be glorious for Odisha as international Purnima Hembram bagged gold in heptathlon with a total of 5898 points. In the seven-part event, she scored 1010 in 100m hurdles (13.78s), 916 in high jump (1.75m), 649 in shot put (11.81m), 896 in 200m (24.90s), 828 in long jump (5.93m), 747 in javelin (44.15m) and 852 in 800m (2:17.95s). She also became eligible to represent the country in the ensuing Asian Games.

The 10-member Odisha squad ended its campaign with a total of five medals, which included three gold, one silver and one bronze. Among other Odisha athletes in action on the final day, Pragyan Prasanti Sahu finished fourth in the heats of women 100 metre hurdles with a timing of 15.19 seconds, while international Jauna Murmu, who had won the 400m hurdles gold medal with New Meet Record on the opening day, finished fifth in 400 metre run, clocking 53.42 seconds. Top male sprinter Amiya Kumar Mallick disappointed the state as he finished a poor fifth in his 100 metre heats, taking 11.53 seconds. His timing was inferior than that of Dutee Chand.
