  Asian Nations Cup Chess: Padmini win 5 medals

Indian women`s team, featuring Odisha International Master Padmini Rout, bagged three medals in the Asian Nations Cup Chess Championship, held at Hamedan in Iran from July 26 to August 4, 2018. The medals included one gold, one silver and one bronze.

Other members of the Indian women’s team were: Harika Dronavalli, Eesha Karavade, Vaishali R and Aakanksha Hagawane. India captured the gold in blitz category with 21.5 points.

Vietnam settled for silver with 18.5 points, while China bagged bronze with 17.5 points. It was India’s first gold medal finish at the event since 2014.

 

In the rapid competition, which was played first, India settled with silver, logging a total of 17 points. China ran away with the gold, garnering 23.5 points, while host Iran took the bronze with 17 points.

China also came on top in the classical event, pocketing the gold with 20.5 points. The silver medal was grabbed by Vietnam with 17.5 points, while India claimed bronze also with 17.5 points.

Bhubaneswar-based Indian Oil employee Padmini also won one individual silver and bronze medal each in this tournament. Indian women team was accompanied by young coach Grandmaster Swapnil Dhopade
