Ranji Trophy: Odisha trounce Tripura by 5 wkts
01 Dec 2018 CUTTACK

Career-best seven-wicket haul by speedster Suryakant Pradhan and a half-century each by captain Biplab Samantaray, Subhransu Senapati and Abhishek Raut powered hosts Odisha to a thumping five-wicket win over Tripura on the fourth and last day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group-C match at DRIEMS Ground in Tangi, 20kms from here today.

The win, which fetched Odisha six points, was their second in a row and elevated them to the fourth position in the group table with 13 points from four matches. Odisha will next meet Jharkhand at JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi from December 6 to 9.

Pradhan set the platform for the win against Tripura, bagging seven wickets for 40 runs in the first innings. Put into bat on a green top, Tripura found Pradhan too hot to handle and were bundled out for 122. In reply, Odisha rode on a captain’s knock of 89 by Samantaray to muster a total of 212.

After conceding a first-innings lead of 90 runs, Tripura bounced back into the match by compiling healthy second-innings total of 304. Allrounder MB Mura Singh threatened to take the match out of the home team’s grip, hitting a belligerent 75 in the second innings and destroying the top half of the Odisha second innings with a four-wicket haul.

Chasing 215 for victory, Odisha were in deep trouble, losing five wickets for 79. However, an unfinished sixth-wicket partnership of 138 runs between Senapati and Raut enabled Odisha pull up the thrilling win. Senapati hit an unbeaten 84 with the help of nine boundaries, while Raut slammed an unconquered 83, which was studded with nine fours and two sixes.

This was the sixth first-class half-century for Senapati and second for Raut. This was also the career-best knock by Raut in first-class cricket. Senapati, who scored 41 earlier in the first innings, was adjudged the Player of the Match. Odisha pacers Basant Mohanty and Rajesh Mohanty bowled well in the second essay, bagging four wickets apiece. Odisha made two chances for the match against Tripura, replacing Shantanu Mishra and Dhiraj Singh with Abhishek Raut and Suryakant Pradhan.
