  Rutaparna wins silver, bronze in Lagos International Classics

Rising Odisha star Rutaparna Panda continued her fine form, bagging silver medal in mixed doubles and bronze in women doubles with partners Shlok Ramchandran and Maneesha K respectively at the 5th Lagos International Badminton Classics, held at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, Nigeria from 24 to 27 July, 2019.

Rutaparna and Shlok settled for mixed doubles silver when they lost in the final against compatriots and top seeds MR Arjun and Maneesha K 16-21, 17-21. On their way to the final, Rutaparna and Shlok beat Egypt pair of Adham Hatem Elgamal and Doha Hany 21-12, 21-18 in semifinals, USA combination of Howard Shu and Paula Lynn Obanana 21-15, 17-21,21-15 in quarterfinals and Nigerial duo Issac Minaphee and Augustina Ebhomien Sunday 21-10, 21-15 in first round.

 

The women doubles pair of Rutaparna and Maneesha won the bronze after losing to top seeds Bengisu Ercetin and Nazlican Inci of Turkey 13-21, 12-13, 14-21 in the semifinals. The Indian duo earlier made it to the last-four stage, defeating Nigerian combination of Augustina Ebhomien Sunday and Peace Orgi 21-9, 21-5 and Sri Lankan pair of Thilini Pramodika Hendahewa and Kavidi Sirimannage 21-16, 21-12 in their first two rounds.

With the silver and bronze at Lagos International Classics, the total number of international medals for Rutaparna has gone up to five, which also include three gold. Cuttack lass Rutaparna will play her next tournament at Hyderabad Open in Hyderabad from August 6 to 11, 2019.
