  Thai International: Bhagat settles for silver medals

Odisha World Champion Pramod Bhagat settled for silver medals, both in singles and doubles events of the Thailand Para-Badminton International in Bangkok, which concluded today at Huamark Indoor Stadium in Bangkon, Thailand today.

Bhagat conceded the mens SL3 singles final match to compatriot and doubles partner Manoj Sarkar 9-11 in the first geme of the final match as he suffered due to a leg injury. In the doubles final, Bhagat and Sarkar went down fighting to Mongkhon Bunsun-Siripong Teamarrom (Thailand) in 1-2 games.

However, Bhagat further confirmed his qualification for Tokyo Olympics 2020 as the leader of the pack in the World Ranking with a total of 5530 points. He is far ahead of the second-placed Daniel Bethell of England who has 3410 points to his name.

 

A total of three players from Odisha represented India in this tournament, which commenced on September 16. The other two were Gedala Dilleswar Rao and Deep Ranjan Bisoyee (SL4). Rao and Bisoyee lost in doubles second round. In singles, Bisoye lost in second round and Rao went down in pre-quarters.

Men Singles SL3: Pramod Bhagat (India): Gruoup-A League: beat Xavier Debavelaere (France) 21-17, 21-18; beat Sheiha Feras (UAE) 21-12, 21-14. Pre-Quarters: beat Muhd Huzairi Abdul Malek (Malaysia) 21-18, 19-21, 21-15. Quarterfinals: beat Mathieu Thomas (France) 21-18, 21-19. Semifinals: beat Daisuke Fujihara (Japan) 21-18, 15-21, 21-16. Final: Lost to Manoj Sarkar (India) 9-11 (Retired injured).

Men Doubles SL3-SL4: Pramod Bhagat-Manoj Sarkar (India): Group-A League: beat Richar William Lean-Colin Leslie (Scotland) 21-12, 21-12; beat Hayden Bognar-Rohan Jaywant Sonawane (Australia-India) 21-7, 21-9. Quarterfinals: beat Mathieu Thomas-Nitesh Kumar (France-India) 21-17, 22-20. Semifinals: beat Chawarat Kittichokwattana-Sangnil Singha (Thailand) 21-15, 22-20. Final: lost to Mongkhon Bunsun-Siripong Teamarrom (Thailand) 16-21, 21-8, 14-21.
