  Indian hockey teams announced for Olympic Qualifiers

Hockey India today named 18-member each Indian men and women teams for the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers which are scheduled to take place at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar on 1st and 2nd November, 2019.

As many as four players from Odisha, including three women have made it to the Indian teams. They are: Deep Grace Ekka, Namita Toppo, Lilima Minz and Amit Rohidas. The men team will be captained by Manpreet Singh with SV Sunil as his deputy. The women team will be led by Rani with Savita serving as vice-captain.

 

In the two-legged Olympic Qualifiers, World No 5 Indian men will be up against World No 22 Russia, while the World No 9 Indian women will face World No 13 USA. The winners of the Olympic Qualifiers will qualify for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

The winners will be determined as follows: teams will be ranked according to the number of points each has accumulated in both matches (for each match, 3 points are awarded to the winner, 1 point to each team in the event of a draw and 0 point to the loser).

If there is equality among the two teams, then the teams will be ranked according to their respective goal difference. If the equality remains, a shoot-out competition will be played to establish the winner. Tokyo Olympic hockey tournaments will be staged from 25 July to 7 August next year and involve 12 men and 12 women teams.

INDIAN MEN TEAM: PR Sreejesh, Krishan Bahadur Pathak, Harmanpreet Singh, Varun Kumar, Surender Kumar, Gurinder Singh, Rupinder Pal Singh, Amit Rohidas, Manpreet Singh (Captain), Nilakanta Sharma, Hardik Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, SV Sunil (Vice-captain), Mandeep Singh, Akashdeep Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Simranjeet Singh. Chief Coach: Graham Reid.

INDIAN WOMEN TEAM: Savita (Vice-captain), Rajani Etimarpu, Deep Grace Ekka, Gurjit Kaur, Reena Khokhar, Salima Tete, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Nikki Pradhan, Monika, Neha Goyal, Lilima Minz, Namita Toppo, Rani (Captain), Vandana Katariya, Navneet Kaur, Lalremsiami, Navjot Kaur, Sharmila Devi.
