Odisha suffered first defeat in the East Zone Vijay Merchant Trophy U-16 Cricket Tournament when they lost to Bengal by an innings and 65 runs on the last day of their three-day match at Barabati Stadium here today.

Opting to bat, Odisha were all out for 133. In reply, Bengal mustered a healthy total of 369 which gave them a lead of 236. Odisha performed slightly better in the second innings, making 171, thanks to a half-century by Subham Naik. But that was not enough to save them from innings defeat.

Mohammed Zishan and Ansuman Bej bowled well for Odisha, pocketing four wickets each. Notwithstanding the defeat, Odisha qualified for the pre-quarterfinals where they will take on Punjab at Railway Cricket Ground in Rajkot from November 25 to 28.
