  Khelo India Youth Games: Odisha finish 17th with 21 medals

Odisha bagged a total of 21 medals to claim 17th position in the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games, which was held in Guwahati, Assam from 10 to 22 January, 2020. The 21 medals included five gold, eight silver and eight bronze.

Maharashtra retained supremacy in this Games with a total of 256 medals, which included 78 gold, 77 silver and 101 bronze medals. Haryana finished second with 200 medals (68 gold, 60 silver, 72 bronze), followed by Delhi at third with 122 medals (39 gold, 36 silver, 47 bronze).

Interestingly, cycling proved to be the most successful discipline for Odisha, fetching three gold and one silver medals. Swasti Singh boosted the image of cycling, bagging two gold and one silver. The other gold in cycling was claimed by Dinesh Kumar.

 

Weightlifting was second most medal-fetching sport for the state, delivering one gold (Kuldeep Sahu), two silver (Muna Nayak, Manoja Sahu) and two bronze (Moti Jani, Banita Ghadei).

As individual competitor, gymnast Jagadish Barik emerged second most successful, winning one gold and one silver. Swimming gave Odisha three silver medals and all three were pocketed by Pratyasha Ray in U-21 women backstroke events. She finished second in 200m (2:30.85), 100m (1:09.38) and 50m (32.16). 

Odisha captured three medals in football with the state U-17 girls winning silver, while both the U-17 boys and U-21 girls teams taking bronze. Swimming gave Odisha two silver medals and both were pocketed by Pratyasa Ray in U-21 women backstroke events. Hockey provided two bronze medals, which were secured by U-21 boys and U-17 gilrs teams.

Dhanamati Xess became the only medallist in athletics, capturing bronze in U-17 gilrs javelin throw. Around 6,800 athletes from 37 states and union territories vied for honours in 20 disciplines of the Khelo India Youth Games.
