  KIUG 2020: Punjab University emerge overall champions

Punjab University, Chandigarh emerged overall champions with a total of 46 medals in the 1st Khelo India University Games, which concluded in Bhubaneswar today. The 46 medals of Punjab University included 17 gold, 19 silver and 10 bronze.

Savitribai Phule Pune University settled as first runners-up with 37 medals (17 gold, 11 silver, 9 bronze), while Punjabi University, Patiala finished second runners-up with 33 medals (13 gold, 6 silver, 14 bronze). As many as 113 universities won medals.

The closing ceremony, held at KIIT University, was attended by a host of dignitaries, including Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Youth Affair and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, Indian Olympic Association President Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra, Odisha Sports Minister Tusharkanti Behera, Association of Indian Universities Secretary General Dr Pankaj Mittal, SAI Director General Sandip Pradhan, KIIT & KISS founder Dr Achyuta Samanta and Odisha Sports Secretary Vishal Dev.

 

As many as 64 universities claimed at least one gold while 113 institutions went home with at least one medal after 10 days of competition. Swimmers Sadhvi Dhuri (Savitribai Phule Pune University) and Siddhant Sejwal (Panjab University) were the most successful athletes at the Games with five gold each.

Woman sprint super star Dutee Chand bagged a double for KIIT, winning both 100m and 200m gold. Harmilan Singh Bains of Punjabi University also bagged a double, winning gold medals in women 1500m and 800m run.

Running is in the blood of Harmilan whose parents are former international athletes. Her father Amandeep was a 1500m runner with medals at the South Asian Games and several national meets; and mother Madhuri Singh is an Asian Games silver medallist in the 800m, from the Busan games in 2002.

Among other other highly successful athletes, Narendra Pratap Singh (Mangalore University) and Jyoti (Panjab University) completed their respective long distance doubles, winning both the 10,00m and 5000m gold.
