  Natl Jr Athletics: Sabita grabs gold, Manisha gets silver

Odisha bagged one gold and one silver medal on the opening day of the 36th National Junior Athletics Championship at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati, Assam today. Both the medals were captured by girls in long jump. Odisha Athletics Association has fielded a 12-member squad in this championship.

Sabita Toppo won the gold medal in under-16 girls long jump with a leap of 5.59 metres. Sabita hails from Sundargarh district and has been honing her skill at the Reliance Foundation Odisha Athletics High Performance Centre in Bhubaneswar since August, 2019.

Sabita had also bagged gold medal along with National Record in the previous National Junior Athletics Championship in Guntur (AP) in November, 2019, but in U-16 girls pentathlon. This time she excelled in long jump.

The silver medal today was captured by Manisha Meral in under-20 girls long jump event with a jump of 5.63 metres. A trainee of Khelo India Academy in KIIT, Bhubaneswar, Manisha, in fact, retained the U-20 long jump silver medal she had won in the last National Junior Championship in Guntur.
 

Among other Odisha athletes in action today at Sarusajai Stadium, middle-distance runner Dilip Naik qualified for the final in under-20 boys 1500 metre event with a time of 4:07.55. The final will take place on tomorrow evening.

Madhumita Deb also qualified for the final in under-20 girls 100 metre sprint with a third-place finish in preliminary heats. She clocked 12.46 seconds. Anshika Routray, daughtger of Olympian and hurdles national record-holder Anuradha Biswal, however, finished sixth in under-16 girls shot put with a throw of 12.35 metres.

As many as 1637 boys and girls in four age groups are competing in 145 events in the five-day National Junior Athletics Championships. Coming from 32 States and Union Territories, they are together making the event the single largest sporting event of the country since the outbreak of Covid-19 last year.
