  Sports Department launches first `Snow Girl’ of Odisha

Ranjita Behera made an unusual entry to the sports ecosystem of Odisah as the Department of Sports & Youth Services (DSYS), Government of Odisha, today launched her as the first and only qualified skier of the State in Bhubaneswar today.

Describing Ranjita as ‘Snow Girl’, the DSYS announced that she would made Odisha proud by representing the State in the 2nd Khelo India National Winter Games, scheduled to be held at Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir from 19-25 February, 2021, in Alpine Ski event.’’

“She has also been selected by Ski & Snowboard India to participate in the coming Senior National Ski & Snowboard Championships-2021 to be held in Uttarakhand from 26-28 February, 2021,’’ the DSYS informed through a press release.

“The DSYS has shown keen interest in the snow sports and provided her with all sorts of assistance in order to enable her participate in the said championships as a first skier of the State. She is ready to move to the snow slopes for her pre-event practice.

 

Wishing her the very best for her upcoming events, Odisha Sports Minister, Tusharkanti Behera said, “It is a moment of pride for us that Ms Ranjita Behera will be the first Odia from the state to participate in Snow Games. We will extend all necessary support to excel and bring medals. She will be an inspiration for others, especially young girls, who may have dreams to follow the sport of skiing.”

Thanking Sports Minister and the DSYS, Ranjita said, “I will be participating in the slalom event, which is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding discipline, involving skiing between poles or gates. I will also participate in Ski Mountaineering in the coming days,” she said.

Ranjita hails from the steel city of Rourkela and is the youngest daughter of Raghunath Behera and Annapurna Behera. Her father is a retired employee of Rourkela Steel Plant. She is also an NCC ‘C’ certificate holder from the Directorate of NCC, Odisha.
