  Eswar, Mayuri crowned Odisha State TT champions

Mela Eswar Rao won his maiden mens singles title, while Mayuru Chatterjee clinched a hat-trick by bagging the womens singles crown for the third year in a row at the 26th Odisha State Table Tennis Championships 2020, which concluded at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack today.

Local favourite Eswar Rao went on to bag a double by emerging both youth boys and mens singles champion. Bhubaneswar duo Jigyanshu Sahoo and Swetapadma Dalai also a claimed a double each with the former winning cadet boys and sub-junior boys singles titles and the latter emerging sub-junior and junior girls singles champion.

The four-day championships featured competition in nine singles events. Titles in cadet girls singles and junior boys singles were captured by Urja Verma and Mohit Behuray respectively. Around 200 players from affiliated district and institutional units participated in the championships, which was organised by Odisha State Table Tennis Association (OSSTA).

 

The prize distribution ceremony was graced by Cuttack Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ananya Das as chief guest and Sambad Group Managing Director Monika Nayyar Pattanaik as guest of honour. OSSTA secretary Rabindra Kumar Parida, vice-president Chitta Ranjan Mohanty and treasurer Nihar Ranjan Mishra were present on the occasion.

Earlier at the opening ceremony on January 24, tribute was paid to former state table tennis player and retired FCI official Late Mehtab Khan. Khan, who represented Odisha at the National Table Tennis Championship several times, passed away during Covid pandemic. Matches at the State championship were conducted by referees Sujit Ray, Jiban Ballav Samal, Bijan Das Mohapatra, KSN Murty, Kallol Ganguly and Surabhi Parija.

Cadet boys singles: Jigyanshu Sahoo (Cuttack) bt Anindya A Das (Bhubaneswar) 3-1 (12-10, 12-10, 6-11, 11-7).
Sub-junior girls singles (League format): Swetapadma Dalai (Bhubaneswar) champion,
Sania Mishra (Khurda) runner-up.
Sub-junior boys singles: Jigyanshu Sahoo (Cuttack) bt Anindya A Das (Bhubaneswar) 4-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-5, 11-7).
Junior girls singles: Swetapadma Dalai (Bhubaneswar) bt Nandini Biswal (Bhubaneswar) 4-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-8, 11-3).
Junior boys singles: Mohit Behuray (Cuttack) bt Tuhin Banik (Bhubaneswar) 4-1 (11-6, 7-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-7).
Youth boys singles: M Eswar Rao (Cuttack) bt Mohit Behuray (Cuttack) 4-0 (11-4, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8).
Women singles: Mayuri Chaterjee (Bhadrak) bt Swetapadma Dalai (Bhubaneswar) 4-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9).
