Odisha scripted sporting history as the 22nd edition of the Asian Athletics Championships got off the blocks with a spectacular opening ceremony at the refurbished Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today. The three-hour-long extravaganza, displaying the rich art, culture and history of Odisha, provided plenty of entertainment to a 10,000 strong crowd.
After the welcome address by Athletic Federation of India (AFI) president Adille Sumariwalla, who expressed his gratitude to the Odisha for hosting the championship at short notice, a movie titled `The 90-Day Challenge’ showed how the state put in place the huge infrastructure facility for the biggest show of athletics in just three months.
International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) president Lord Sebastian Coe and Athletic Associations of Asia (AAA) president Dahlan Al-Hammad, the two special guests of the occasion, also minced no words in praising Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for the staging the Asian Championships.
