AAC 2017: India top tally with 29 medals
09 Jul 2017

India topped the medals tally for the first time in the history of Asian Athletics Championships, bagging a total of 29 medals in the 22nd edition of the continental event, which concluded at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today. The 29 medals featured 12 gold, 5 silver and 12 bronze. China finished as runners-up with 20 medals that included 8 gold.

India secured five gold, one silver and three bronze medals on the final day. World junior javelin champion Neeraj Chopra lived up to his top billing, capturing gold with new meet record of 85.23m in his last attempt. Indians also claimed two gold medals in relay events and one each in mens 5000m and womens heptathlon.

Host Odisha bagged another bronze medal through Purnima Hembram, who finished third in womens heptathlon with a total of 5798 points. She had also secured heptathlon bronze in the 2015 Asian Championships. Swapna Barman gave India the gold medal, aggregating of 5942 points.

The Indian 4x400m mens relay team, comprising Kunju Mohammed, Amoj Jacob, Muhammad Anas and Rajiv Arokia, ran away with the gold medal in the last track event, completing the race in 3:02.92. In the womens 4x400m relay event, 400m winner Nirmala Sheoran anchored India to victory despite a stutter during the baton exchange at the last lap.

Indian long-distance runner Govindan Lakshmanan clinched a superb double today, adding the 10000m gold to the 5000m yellow metal he had won on the opening day. Thonakal Gopi finished just behind him to take silver, making it a medal rich evening for India.

Indian women middle distance runner Archana Adhav finished first in the 800m, but her joy soon turned into disappointment as she was deemed to have made a push at Sri Lankan sprinter Nimali Arachchige. The gold medal was awarded to Arachchige instead, making it a Sri Lankan one-two with Gyananthika Thushari winning silver, and fourth-placed Fumika Omori was elevated to bronze.

There was disappointment for India in the sprint events at the start of the evening session, with Dutee Chand and Srabani Nanda finishing fourth and fifth respectively in the womens 200m, with Viktoriya Zyabkina of Kazakhstan winning gold with 23.10 seconds, completing a hat-trick of 200m titles at the Asian Championships and a sprint double at these Championships.

Odisha sprint star Amiya Kumar Mallick ended the championships with no medal as he finished seventh in a fiercely contested mens 200m final, which was won by Yang Chun-Han of Chinese Taipei with a time of 20.66s. Jinson Johnson fetched India one bronze medal, finishing third in mens 800m.
