Manipur boys and Karnataka girls emerged overall champions in the 22nd Sub-Junior National Fencing Championship, which concluded at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack today. In overall boys, Haryana and Tamil Nadu finished second and third respectively, while in overall girls, the second and third positions were occupied by Manipur and Telangana respectively.
Rajiv Mehta, president of Fencing Association of India (FAI) and secretary general of Indian Olympic Association, graced the closing ceremony as chief guest. FAI secretary general Basir Ahmed Khan and Odisha State Fencing Association (OSFA) secretary Debendra Kumar Sahoo were present on the occasion.
However, host Odisha failed to win a single medal in the three-day championship. It is not know whether Odisha fielded any team at all and if so who represented the home team.
Organised jointly by OSFA and Union Club, the championship had a total of 450 participants from 22 states in the fray. The opening ceremony was graced by Cuttack DCP Pratik Singh, Odisha Football Association secretary Asirbad Behera, FAI general secretary Bashir Ahmed and OSFA general secretary Debendra Sahoo.
