It will be another jewel in the crown for Odisha as a leading sports promoting state of India when the Eastern India State plays host to a international badminton tournament, the lowest-tier of a Badminton World Federation (BWF) event, from 25 to 30 January 2022. The tournament will be known as BWF Odisha Open Super 100 2022.
The Odisha Open will be one of three back-to-back BWF tournaments, India will be staging in January next year, according to the international calender unveiled by the BWF today. The India Open Super 500, which was cancelled in 2020 as well as this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be the first tournament of 2022, scheduled from January 11 to 16.
The Syed Modi International Super 300, which was also cancelled by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for the second year in a row in September, will be held from January 18 to 23. It will be followed by the Odisha Open Super 100 from January 25 to 30.
According to Odisha State Badminton Association (OSBA) Secretary Ninleen Kumar, the BWF Odisha Open is most likely to be staged at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack. Originally planned to be held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, the tournament would be shifted to Cuttack due to incompletion of the construction work of the indoor badminton complex in the Capital City of Odisha.
While confirming the hosting of the BWF Odisha Open 2022 in his Twitter handle, Odisha Sports & Youth Services Department Secretary, R Vineel Krishna said, “Odisha Open will be held from next yeat onwards. Odisha has lot of potential in badminton and this event will further inspire the badminton players from the State.
