  Sohini wins Asian U-14 singles crown on debut

Budding Odisha tennis talent Sohini Sanjay Mohanty made her debut at the Asian U-14 Championship memorable, winning the girls singles title at Little Angels School Sports Complex in Sonipat, Haryana today. She clinched the title, defeating 4th seed Priyanka Rana (India) 6-4, 7-5 in the final match.

The title triumph assumed added significance as Bhubaneshwar girl Sohini achieved the feat as an unseeded player. According to her coach Farhan Ali, KIIT International School student Sohini won seven matches in a row, including two qualifying ones before she emerged champion in the five-day tournament. On her way to the final, she beat two other seeded players, including top seed Riya Sachdeva.

“Sohini asserted complete supremacy in the tournament, winning all of her seven matches in straight sets. She won a total of 85 games and lost 30. This shows how dominant she was in the tournament,’’ said coach Ali.

MATCHES OF SOHINI: Beat 4th seed Priyanka Rana (India) 6-4, 7-5 in final; beat Ishi Maheshwari (India) 6-1, 6-0 in semifinals; beat top seed Riya Sachdeva (India) 6-3, 6-2 in quarterfinals; beat sixth seed Snigdha Kanta (India) 6-1, 6-2 in Pre-Quarterfinals; beat Sherry Sharma (India) 6-0, 6-2 in Main-draw Round of 32; beat Aditi Tyagi (India) 6-4, 6-1 in Qualifying Round of 16; beat Diya Chaudhary (India) 6-3, 6-2 in Qualifying Round of 32.
