  Tennis: Sohini becomes India No 1, Debasis No 2

Odisha tennis teenagers Debasis Sahoo and Sohini Sanjay Mohanty have made the State proud by becoming India No 1 in U-14 girls caregory and India No 2 in U-16 boys group respectively as per latest rankings, published by All India Tennis Association (AITA) on 10th January 2022.

Bhubaneswar duo Sohini and Debasis now have a total of 791 and 603.25 ranking points to respective names. Debasis moved up from sixth to second position in All India rankings, bagging a double crown in the AITA National Series Tennis Tournament at Sania Mirza Tennis Academy in Hyderabad on today.

 

He won both the singles and doubles titles in under-16 boys group. Top seed Debasis won the singles final, beating second seed Jason Michael David of Karnataka 6-1, 7-5. In doubles title clash, Debasis and his partner Siddhant Kishore Sharma from Haryana, defeated Karnataka combination of Vishnu Balachandar and Sriniketh Kannan 6-4, 6-4.

Sohini climbed to the top of the list with a series of achievements in last four months. She won the singles title at the Asian U-14 Tournament in Sonipat, Haryana and the AITA Super Series U-14 doubles crown at Hyderabad in September 2021. She capped the year with the doubles title at the AITA U-14 National Tournament in Aurangabad, Maharashtra in December.

Both Sohini and Debasis are being groomed by coach Farhan Ali at his academy in Bhubaneswar. Odisha Tennis Association recently felicitated the two youngsters for outstanding performance.
