After losing the first leg 1-3 in shootout, host India bounced back in style to beat Olympic champions Argentina 4-3 in the second leg of their FIH Mens Hockey Pro League fixture at Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar today. Jugraj Singh was the hero of the Indian win, converting two penalty corners into goals in the 20th and 52nd minutes.
An aggressive India raced to a 2-0 lead with Hardik Singh (17-PC) and Jugraj scoring through penalty corners. But Argentina fought back to level the score with Nicolas Della Torre (40-PC) and Tomas Domene (51-PS) being the scorers of the two goals.
The match produced more excitement as the two sides scored respective third goal of the match early in the last quarter. Jugraj regained the lead for India, scoring his second goal of the match, converting another penalty corner in the 52nd minute.
India captain Amit Rohidas created the second clear cut chance his team to score when he burst through the Argentina defence to draw a foul. The ensuing penalty corner gave Jugraj Singh his fourth goal for the senior team.
Unfazed, Argentina once again restored parity with Martin Ferreiro scoring a field goal in the 56th minute. When it seemed that the match would once again go to the shoot out, Mandeep Singh scored the winning goal for India, finding the net in the final minute.
India defender Varun Kumar was awarded as the Player of the Match. The result means India move to the top of the FIH Pro League ahead of Netherlands, with Argentina in fourth position, one point behind Germany.
