  Jayanti bags 3 medals in Dubai Para Athletics GP

Odisha para athletics ace Jayanti Behera capped her remarkable campaign with one silver and two bronze medals at the World Para Athletics Dubai 2022 Grand Prix and 13th Fazza International Para Athletics Championships at the Dubai Club for People of Determination grounds in Dubai today.

Jayanti completed the treble, claiming the bronze medal in women T-47 100m sprint with a time of 13.16 seconds. Earlier, she secured silver in 200m on March 23, clocking 26.94 seconds and bronze in 400m with a time of 1:00.39 on March 22.

India bagged three medals on the opening day with Dharambir and Devendra Singh winning one silver medal each. In club throw men final F32/51, Dharambir threw the club to a distance of 31.09 metres in his second attempt to finish second.

 

Dharambir also set a new Asian record. Devendra settled for the silver in mens discus throw F44 after hurling the discus to a distance of 50.36 m in combined F42/43/44 category.

Paralympian Dharambir led a 29-member Indian side in this championship. Indian para athletes are aiming to make a mark and achieve Minimum Qualification Standard for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England and Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.

Around 500 para-athletes from 43 nations are vying for medals in this championships. Jayanti is the only para athlete to have secured a berth in the Indian squad. She is also set to compete in women 100 and 200 metre events.
