In the Super-4s League, India beat Japan 2-1 in their first match, but drew the next two games against Malaysia 3-3 and Korea 4-4. India qualified for the Super-4 stage, with one win, one loss and one draw in the Pool-A league.
India drew with Pakistan 1-1 in the opening match, lost to Japan 2-5 in the second and trounced hosts Indonesia 16-0 in the third. Odisha defender Dipsan Tirkey was the star of the Indian win against Indonesia, scoring four goals.
Odisha Olympian Birendra Lakra led the 20-member Indian team, which featured three more players from Odisha. They were: Dipsan Tirkey, Nilam Sanjeep Xess and Abhisek Lakra. A total of eight countries battled it out for the title in Asia Cup, which was a qualifier for the 2023 FIH World Cup. However, India has already qualified for the World Cup by virtue of being the hosts.
BJ Kariappa was the Head Coach of the Indian team. Former India Captain and two-time Olympian Sardar Singh accompanied the team as Coach. He made his debut as India Coach. Birendra Lakra, played this tournament by returning rom retirement. Junior World Cup player Abhisek Lakra made his debut for the Senior Indian Men Team.
