  Odisha boy Debasis becomes Junior Davis Cupper

Debasis Sahoo became the first tennis player from Odisha to represent India U-16 Boys team in the Junior Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Final Qualifying at R K Khanna Stadium in New Delhi from 11 to 16 April 2022. Team India made history by winning the tournamentr, beating Japan 2-1 in the gold-medal match today.

Japan bagged silver, while Australia secured bronze, defeating Kazakhstan. With this win, India secured a berth in the 16-team World Group Finals along with Japan and Australia. Bushan Haobam and Rushil Khosla were other two players of the Indian team, which was captained by Sajid Lodi.

 

On their way to the final, host India defeated Iran 2-1 in the quarterfinals on April 14 and Kazakhtan 2-1 in the semifinals on April 15. India advanced to the quarterfinals by finishing second in Group-A league with two wins and one loss.

India started the group-league campaign with a 2-1 win over Pakistan on April 11. They got walk-over against Indonesia next day, but lost to Australia 1-2 on April 13.

Debasis got the opportunity to play one singles match in the competition. In his only match, Debasis lost to Kasra Rahmani 4-6, 4-6 in the quarterfinals against Iran.
