  Shuttler Deep wins gold; Pramod settles for 2 bronze

Deep Ranjan Bisoyee made Odisha proud by winning the mens doubles SL3-SL4 gold medal with Bihar partner Mohammad Arwaz Ansari at the Brazil Para Badminton International, which concluded in Sao Paulo, Brazil today.

Deep and Arwaz beat Indian opponents Kumar Nitesh and Tarun Tarun in the final by 2-1 games (13-21, 21-17, 21-18).

But Odisha star Pramod Bhagat failed to live up to his reputation as World and Paralympic champion as he settled for two bronze medals in the six-day tournament.

Top seed Bhagat bagged one bronze medal each in mens SL3 singles and SL3-SU5 mixed doubles evednts after losing in the semifinals.

 

In the mens SL3 singles semifinals, Kumar Nitesh (India) beat Bhagat 21-7, 19-21, 21-19.

In mixed doubles, Bhagat and his partner Palak Kohli went down to Japan opponents Daisuke Fujihara and Akiko Sugino 14-21, 21-16, 16-21 in their last-four match.

Deep Bisoyee also participated in mens SL4 singles and went up to quarterfinals before losing to Tarun Tarun 15-21, 14-21.

Tarun went on to win the gold. Indian shuttlers bagged a total of 28 medals, which included nine gold, six silver and 13 bronze.

Sunil Pradhan of Odisha accompanied the 22-member Indian squad as team official. A BWF Para Badminton International Level 2 event, Brazil Para Badminton International took place after a gap of two years.
