  KIUG 2021: Odisha start campaign with 3 medals

Odisha bagged three medals in the 2nd Khelo India University Games 2021 (KIUG), which commenced at different venues in Bangalore, Karnataka today. The three medals included one gold, one silver and one bronze. Incidentally, all three medals were secured by weightlifters.

Woman international Sneha Soren won the first medal for Odisha in 49kg weight class. Representing Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), the Bhubaneswar-based Deemed to be University, she lifted 69kg in snatch and 92kg in clean & jerk for a total of 161kg.

Pramila Krisani of Berhampur University won the silver medal in women 55kg class, lifing 71kg in snatch, 95kg in clean & jerk and 166kg in total. The bronze medals was captured by Rajendra Muduli of KIIT in men 61kg class, lifting 108kg in snatch, lifting 130kg in clean & jerk and 238kg in total.

 

Ranjita Majhi of KIIT University finished fourth in women 49kg class class, lifting 53kg in snatch, 73kg in clean & jerk and 126kg in total. Kumbheswar Mallik of KIIT finished eighth in men 55kg class, lifting 90kg in snatch and 117kg in clean & jerk for a totral of 207kg. Jagadish Nahak of Berhampur University finished fourth in men 67kg class, lifting 118kg in snatch, 143kg in clean & jerk and 261kg in total.

A total of five universities from Odisha have fielded competitors in this edition of KIUG. Other four are: Berhampur University, Utkal University, Sambalpur University and Rama Devi Womens University.

The opening ceremony of the 2nd KIUG was held at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium today. Representing hosts Jain University, Srihari Nataraj, the youngest Indian swimmer to achieve Olympic standard time, took the oath on behalf of all athletes after the Games were declared open by Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu.

There was also a special video message by Prime Minister Narendra Modi played on the big screen. Sports legends such as Vimal Kumar, Anju Bobby George, Reeth Abraham, Ashwini Nachappa, Malathi Holla, BR Beedu, AB Subbiah, SV Sunil, VR Raghunath were also part of the opening ceremony.

With close to 4000 participants from nearly 200 Universities, this is the largest multi-discipline event taking place in the state of Karnataka. This edition of KIUG will feature two indigenous sports such as Yogasana and Mallakhamba.

Odisha hosted the first edition of KIUG in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar from 22 February to 1 March 2020. The second edition, which was scheduled to be held in 2021, was delayed due to Covid-19 pandemic.
