  Chess Olympiad Torch Relay in Odisha on July 15

The first-ever Torch Relay for the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad would take place in Odisha on July 15. This was informed by All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA) today. The Olympiad Torch would visit Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark after being received by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

In connection with the Torch Relay, All India Chess Federation (AICF) Secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan met Odisha Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal, Sports Minister Tusharkanti Behera, Sports Department Secretary R Vineel Krishna and KIIT & KISS founder Prof Achyuta Samanta in Bhubaneswar today.

 

The 44th Chess Olympiad is scheduled to be held at Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu from 28 July to 9 August 2022. Players from 188 countries are expected to participate in this mega event. The Olympiad Torch will travel 75 cities before reaching Mahabalipuram.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the Torch from FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich and handed it over to five-time world champion GM Viswanathan Anand at IG stadium, New Delhi earlier on June 19.

During his Odisha visit, AICF Secretary Chauhan also graced the ongong National U-17 Chess Championship at the KIIT Campus, Bhubaneswar. He was felicitated on the occasion. AICF Joint-Secretary Ranjan Mohanty, AOCA Secretary Debabrata Bhatta and KIIT Director Genera (Sports) Dr Gaganendu Das were present in the function.
