  Natl Jr Aquatics: Karnataka crowned overall champions

Karnataka emerged overall champions with 623 points, bagging a total of 78 medals in the 48th Junior National Aquatic Championships that concluded at the Biju Patnaik Swimming Pool, Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar today. The 78 medals included 38 gold, 24 silver and 16 bronze.

The five-day championship, hosted for the first time in Odisha, produced a total of 26 new meet records. But the 20-member Odisha squad failed to win any medal. Among Odisha swimmers, Mannata Mishra put up notable performance in Girls Group-I (15-17 years), finishing fourth in 100m breaststroke, fifth in 200m breaststroke and seventh in 200m medley.

The best swimmer awards for Group-I boys went to Utkarsh Patil of Karnataka as well as Devansh Parmar of Gujarat as both amassed three gold and one silver medal each. In Group-II boys, the award went to Navaneeth Gowda of Karnataka who bagged five gold medals.

 

In the girls Group-I, Apeksha Fernandes of Maharashtra took home the best swimmer award having won five gold medals and creating five new meet records. Hashika Ramachandra of Karnataka was declared the best swimmer in girls Group-II as she won four gold, one silver with four new meet records.

In waterpolo, Bengal emerged champions in boys category while Kerala won the title in girls category. Odsiha Higher Education Minister Rohit Pujari was the chief guest at the closing ceremony. Swimming Federation of India Secretary General Monal Chokshi, Odisha State Sports Secretary R Vineel Krishna, Odisha State Swimming Association Working President Soma Mishra and General Secretary Golap Mohanta were present on the occasion.

Renowned actor R Madhavan was the star attraction on the concluding day. He visited different facilities within Kalinga Stadium complex including the upcoming Aquatic Centre. His son Vedaant Madhavan turned out to be an outstanding performer in the championship, bagging four gold and three silver medals.
