CWG 2022: Lifter Jeremy gives India 2nd gold
31 Jul 2022

Weightlifters continued to make India proud at the 22nd Commonwealth Games as Jeremy Lalrinnunga clinched a gold medal for the country on the second day of the Games at the National Exhibition Center in Birmingham, England today.

This was second gold and fifth medal bagged by Indian weightlifters in the ongoing Games. Earlier on the opening day, Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu won the first gold for India in women 49kg class. Sanket Sargar and Bindyarani Devi secured a silver each, while Poojary Gururaja grabbed the bronze.

Jeremy won the yellow metal in the mens 67kg category with a total lift of 300kg. He lifted 140kg in snatch and 160kg in clean and jerk. Jeremy also created New Games Record in snatch and total. He finished seven kg clear of his nearest competitor.

Since Jeremy became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the Youth Olympics in 2018, the 19-year-old from Aizawl, Mizoram has been marked as something special. He hails from a family of weightlifters and boxers. His father, Lalneihtluanga, had won two gold medals at the sub-junior national championship.

Jeremy dedicated it to his biggest supporters – his grandparents. He said: “My Dada and Dadi used to always pray for me. My Dada left me before I left for Youth Olympics and my Dadi left me post that and I could not be home both times. I know that before every lift I follow everything that they told me to say and that is why I dedicated my medal to them.”

Jeremy motivated himself to win gold at the CWG by keeping the medal as his mobile wallpaper and is now set to take things up a notch and continue to work hard to give his best for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
