  Open Natl Para Athletics: Odisha trio bags 6 medals

A three-member Odisha squad achieved notable success by bagging a total of six medals for India in the 4th Indian Open National Para Athletics Championship, which was held at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on 18 and 19 August 2022. The six medals featured two gold, two silver and two bronze.

Ace woman sprinter Jayanti Behera was most successful among the Odisha trio, winning two gold and one silver medal in the two-day championship. She clinched a precious double by winning the gold both in women T-47 100m and 200m sprint on August 18 and 19 respectively.

 

Jayanti clocked 13.23 seconds in the 100m and 28.39 seconds in 200m run. She missed out on a golden treble by finishing second in 400m run and settled for silver with a timing of 1:03.27 seconds.

Rashmi Ranjan Mallick was second most successful Odisha para athlete, securing one bronze medal each in T-44 100m sprint and long jump. His timing in 100m sprint was 12.32 seconds. In long jump, Mallick finished third with an effort of 5.80 metre.

Prafulla Kumar Khandayatray was the other Odisha competitor in the fray and he too tasted success by claming silver medal in men wheelchair F-54 jevelin, throwing the spear to a distance of 20.18 metre.

Around 270 para athletes from five countries participated in the championship, which was organised by Paralympic Committee of India. Paralympian Markanda Reddy and Bishnu Prasad Mishra accompanied the Odisha para athletes as coaches.

Para Sports Association of Odisha (PSAO) President Kamala Kanta Ratha and Treasurer Sunil Pradhan were also present in the championship to encourage the State athletes put up their best performance.
