  Thai Para Badminton: Bhagat, Bisoyee bag 4 medals

Renowned Odisha shuttlers, Pramod Bhagat and Deep Ranjan Bisoyee bagged a total of four medals in the Thailand Para Badminton International, which was held in Pattaya from 16 to 20 August 2022. The four medals featured one gold, one silver and two bronze.

India para-shuttlers finished their campaign on a highly successful note, garnering a total of 17 medals in the five-day tournament. The 17 medals included four gold, five silver and eight bronze.

Competing in three events, Paralympic champion Pramod Bhagat secured one gold, one silver and one bronze. He grabbed the gold in mens doubles SL3-SL4 event with Sukant Kadam as his partner. In the title clash, Bhagat and Kadam beat Indonesian opponents Dwiyoko and Fredy Setiawan 21-18, 21-13.

 

World champion Bhagat, however, had to settle for silver in mens SL3 singles when he lost to his nemesis Daniel Bethell of England in the final 13-21, 19-21. Bhagat won the bronze in mixed doubles SL3-SU5 category by reaching semifinals with partner Manisha Ramadass. In the semifinals, they lost to French combination of Lucas Mazur and Faustine Noel 13-21, 9-21.

Deep Ranjan Bisoyee pocketed one bronze medal in mens SL3-SL4 doubles by losing the hard-fought semifinals with Mohammad Arwaz Ansari as his partner. Pramod Bhagat and Sukant Kadam beat Bisoyee and Ansari 21-10, 14-21, 21-14 in the last-four round.

A total 173 players participated in this BWF Level-1 Tournament, which featured 22 events. With their medal-winning performances, Bhagat and Bisoyee also qualified for the BWF Para Badminton World Championships, which is scheduled to take place in Japan from 1 to 6 November 2022.
