  Sultan Johor Cup Hockey: India win Gold for 3rd time

Indian Junior Men Hockey Team emerged champions in the 10th Sultan of Johor Cup U-21 International Hockey Tournament, edging out Australia 6-5 in the nail-biting final, via shoot-out, at Johor Bahru in Malaysia today. India won the shoot-out 5-4 after play in the regulation time ended in 1-1 draw.

Odisha forward Sudeep Chirmako was the main architect of the Indian victory, scoring the lone goal for his team in the regulation time and the match-winner in the shoot-out. Among other Indian scorers in the shoot-out, captain Uttam Singh sounded the board twice, while Vishnukant Singh and Ankit Pai hit the target once each.

 

With the gold medal in the 10th edition, India became the most successful team in the Sultan of Johor Cup, having a total of eight medals to its name. Besides the three gold, India has bagged four silver and one bronze till date in the prestigious junior international tournament.

India entered the final by finishing second in its group league with eight points from five matches. India won two, drew two and lost one at the league stage. India held defending champions Great Britain to 5-5 draw in their last league match on October 28.

In their earlier four league matches, India won two, drew one and lost one. They beat host Malaysia 5-2 in their opening match, but suffered a 4-5 defeat in the second game against South Africa. India hammered Japan 5-1 in their third league match to register their second win in the tournament. In their fourth match, India came from behind to hold Austalia to a 5-all draw.

Three players from Odisha are represented the 18-member Indian team in this tournament. They were: defenders Amandeep Lakra, Cyril Lugun and forward Sudeep Chirmako. Among the three, Cyril and Amandeep made their junior international debut in the opening match against Malaysia.

Sudeep had made his Junior India debut in 2018 and was part of the Indian team that won the silver medal in the 9th Sultan of Johar Cup Tournament in 2019. Uttam Singh is leading the Indian team in the onging touornament with Boby Singh Dhami as his deputy.

The 10th edition of Sultan of Johor Cup was held after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. India had bagged silver medal in 2019 edition after a closely-fought match against Great Britain.

October 25: India (Uttam Singh 3-FG, Rohit 12-PC, Johnson Purty 21-FG, Boby Singh Dhami 31-FG, Amandeep Lakra 51-PC) beat Japan (Ikumi Saeki 15-PC) 5-1. PoM: Boby Singh Dhami.

October 26: India (Boby Singh Dhami 2-FG, Sharda Nand Tiwari 8-PC, 35-P; Araijeet Singh Hundai 18-FG, Amandeep 60-FG) drew against Australia (Liam Hart 3-FG, Jack Holland 8-FG, Joshua Brooks 20-PS, 41-PC; Jake Lambeth 49-PC) 5-5. PoM: Vishnukant Singh (India).

October 28: India (CB Poovanna 7-FG, Amandeep 50-FG, Araijeet Singh Hundal 53-FG, Sharda Nand Tiwari 56-PC, 58-PC) drew with Great Britain (Max Anderson 1-FG, 40-FG, Harrison Stone 42-FG, Jami Golden 54-FG, 56-FG) 5-5. PoM: Yuvraj Bhuhi (Great Britain).

29 October (Final): India (Sudeep Chirmako 14-FG) beat Australia (Jack Holland 29-FG) 6-5 in shootout (Regulation time 1-1 draw).
