Former India goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey was elected the new President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), which conducted its General Elections as per the order of the Supreme Court of India at the Football House in New Delhi today. This is the first time in the history of the Federation that a former player became its President.
Chaubey, a BJP politician, who lost the last parliamentary election for the Krishnanagar seat in West Bengal, was voted the President in an Electoral College of 34 State Associations. While Chaubey polled 33 votes, his only rival in the fray and former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia received one vote.

In addition, NA Haris and Kipa Ajay were elected as Vice-President and Treasurer respectively. Haris, a sitting Congress MLA and the president of the Karnataka Football Association, defeated Manvendra Singh by 29-5 votes.
Ajay, who is the secretary of Arunachal Pradesh Football Association, won against Gopalkrishna Kosaraju 32-1. As many 14 members of the Executive Committee, including Football Association of Odisha (FAO) Joint-Secretary Avijit Paul were elected unopposed.
As per the directions of the Supreme Court, six eminent former football internationals of the country have also been co-opted as members of the AIFF Executive Committee. Former Odisha woman international Pinky Bompal Magar is one among them.
The elections were conducted under Returning Officer Umesh Sinha, and Assistant Returning Officer Tapas Bhattacharya in front of FIFA Observer Rolf Tanner, and AFC observer Sonam Jigmi. FIFA RDO Prince Rufus was also present on the occasion.
