The historic Barabati Stadium in Cuttack added one more jewel to its crown by hosting the opening ceremony of the Mens Hockey World Cup 2013 today. Performances by eminent dancers, singers and bollywood superstars were the major attractions of the show.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, International Hockey Federation (FIH) President Tayyab Ikram and Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey were present on the occasion. The event was attended by a large crowd of over 35,0000 enthusiastic fans. Former India captain Dilip Tirkey unveiled the trophy, marking the official opening of the 15th edition of the FIH Hockey Mens World Cup.

The official anthem of the FIH Odisha Hockey Mens World Cup 2023: Hockey Hai Dil Mera was performed live by the composer of the anthem, Pritam along with the 11 singers who sang the original song. Ollywood couple Sabyasachi Mishra and Archana Sahu warmed up the event as they performed the hook step on the theme song. The celebration proceeded with a testament to the culture and traditions of Odisha.

A contingent comprising over 20 different troupes, performed a veneration to Lord Jagannath in the local dance form of Odissi. The act was choreographed by eminent Odissi dancer, choreographer and guru Aruna Mohanty.

The crowds were then introduced to the 16 participating teams with loud cheers ringing out in the end for the home favourites India, who will aim to follow Netherlands (in 1973 & 1998) and Germany (in 2006) to become only the third nation to win the World Cup as the hosts.

The final segment of the celebration shared a montage clip titled as 100 years of Hockey, which showcased the incredible journey of Indian Hockey since its inception. There was a lot more in store as performances by K-Pop band Black Swan thrilled all those present. Bollywood stars, Disha Patani and Ranveer Singh closed out the festivities by enchanting the audience with his charisma.

The FIH Odisha Hockey Mens World Cup 2023 kicks off on the 13th January and will be broadcast across the country, from 3:00 pm onwards, on the Sports Odisha YouTube Channel, DD Sports and watch.hockey.com.
