Hockey World Cup: India, England play thrilling draw
15 Jan 2023

Host India failed to capitalize on home advantage as they drew their crucial Pool-D match 0-0 against England in the 15th Mens Hockey World Cup at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela today. After this match, India and England were tied for the top spot in the pool with four points each. But with a goal difference of five, England are better place than India, who have a goal difference of two.

Earlier in the day, Spain rode on a brace each by Marc Reyne and Marc Miralles to outclash debutants Wales 5-1 in another Pool-D match. Captain Alvaro Iglesias scored the other goal for Spain, while Wales scored their first ever World Cup goal through James Carson. Marc Miralles was awarded as the Player of the Match.

England and India have a recent history of playing tough matches with very little to separate the two teams and that proved to be the case once again as the battle between the two top ranked teams of Pool-D ended in a goalless draw. Both sides had chances aplenty to score but good defending and lack of composure from attackers in crucial moments kept the score tied and earned the teams a point each.

Despite a plethora of penalty corners (eight for England and four for India) and opportunities for both teams, there was no finishing touch to be found in the entire match. The second half saw India dominate possession and territory with midfielder Hardik Singh being the standout player, but once again there were no finishing touches to be found in the circle.

Mandeep Singh did get the ball in the back of the goal towards the end of the third quarter but the whistle had already been blown for a foul before the goal. Phil Roper was on the end of a great long pass, which just left him with the keeper to beat, but his attempt to lift the ball over Sreejesh went just wide and India breathed a sigh of relief.

Fearless first rushing from Manpreet Singh and vice-captain Amit Rohidas, and a solid show in defence helped the hosts secure a crucial point. English keeper Oliver Payne was awarded player of the match. India and England will play respective third and last pool match against Wales and Spain at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubanewar on January 19.
