Mens Hockey World Cup: Australia survice Argentina scare
16 Jan 2023

Three-time champions and World Rank 1 Australia survived a scare in the ongoing 15th Mens Hockey World Cup as they fought back from 2-3 down to manage a 3-3 draw against 2016 Olympic gold medallist Argentina in their thrilling Pool-A match at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today.

Blake Govers scored the third goal for Australia in the 57th minute to enable them secure one point from the drawn match. Martin Ferreiro of Argentina was awarded as the Player of the Match for scoring the third goal for his side.

After this drawn game, the Kookaburras led the pool table with four points from two games and a goal difference of eight. Argentina stood second in the pool, also with four points, but with a goal difference of one.

Malaysia, Netherlands and France earned important wins in three other matches of the day. Malaysia were the first team to get on the board as they came back from a goal down twice to beat Chile 3-2. France replicated them later in the day winning another close contest against South Africa to register their first points in Pool A.

In a battle of the unbeaten teams, Netherlands made light work of New Zealand beating them 4-0, making it two wins in two, to get to six points and now need just a draw in their final game against Chile to confirm their spot at the top of Pool C and earn a direct entry into the quarterfinals.

France captain Victor Charlet and Netherlands skipper Thierry Brinkman were star performers of the day, scoring two goals each. Australia dragflicker Jeremy Hayward scored one goal against Argentina to emerge as the top scorer of the tournament with four goals to his name.
