  HWC 2023: Germany, Netherlands book semifinal berths

Multiple-time champions Germany and Netherlands completed the semifinal line-up of the 15th Mens Hockey World Cup today. In the last two quarterfinals at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, two-time champions Germany beat England 4-3 in shootout while Netherlands trounced Korea 5-1.

The first match of the day was a dramatic affair with Germany fighting back from 0-2 down to edge out England in shoot out. The nerve-wraking match went to the shootout stage after play in the regulation time ended in 2-2 draw.

England created the hopes of a comfortable win as they led 2-0 with Zachary Wallace scoring a field goal in the 11th minute and Liam Ansell converting a penalty corner in the 32nd minute. But with three minutes to go for the final hooter, Germany rose like proverbial phoenix from the ashes and scored twice within two minutes to draw the match 2-2.

 

Leading from the front, captain Mats Grambusch scored the first goal for Germany in the 57th minute, while Tom Grambusch struck the second off a penalty stroke in the 58th minute. Before scoring their first goal, Germany also squandered a penalty stroke as the attempt of Christopher Ruhr hit the crossbar.

Germany, who had won 7 out of the 9 shoot-outs over the past 4 years, were perfect in the shoot-out, scoring all four of their attempts. David Goodfield missed third attempt of England and Danneberg, who was in the goal instead of Stadler for the shoot-outs, saved the final English attempt by Ansell to give the Honamas a famous win, and their first semi-final appearance at the World Cup since 2010.

The last quarterfinal was a lop-sided affair with three-time champions Netherlands registerfing a comfortable win. Koen Bijen was the star of the Dutch win, scoring the first two goals four his country. He was awarded as the Player of the Match.

In the semi-finals, Australia will face Germany, while Belgium will take on Netherlands at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar January 27.

(QF-3, Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar): Germany (Mats Grambusch 57-FG, Tom Grambusch 58-PS) beat England (Zachary Wallace 11-FG, Liam Ansell 32-PC) 6-5 via shootout (Full time 2-2 draw). Shootout: Germany (Christopher Ruhr, Thies Prinz, Hannes Muller, Niklas Wellen) beat England (Liam Ansell, Phil Roper, Zachary Wallace) 4-3. PoM: Mats Grambusch.

Match 32 (QF-4, Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar): Netherlands (Koen Bijen 26-FG, 30-PC; Justen Blok 35-FG, Steijn Van Heijningen 49-FG, Teun Beins 57-PC) beat Korea (Inwoo Seo 50-FG) 5-1. PoM: Koen Bijen.
