  National Beach Soccer: Odisha campaign ends in QFs

Odisha put up impressive performance in the 1st edition of the National Beach Soccer Championship before bowing out in the quarterfinals by losing to Delhi 1-3 in penalty shootout at Dumas Beach in Surat (Gujarat) today. The shootout rule was applied after play in the regulation time ended in 5-5 draw.

Odisha reached quarterfinals by winning three matches and losing one in Group-D league. The 12-member Odisha team started campaign on an inspiring note, trouncing Arunachal Pradesh 7-3 and Dadra & Nagar Haveli & Daman & Diu 10-2.

In their third league match, Odisha lost to Goa 2-4. But indomitable Odisha team thrashed Karnataka 7-3 in their fourth and last league game to secure a pace in the quarterfinals.

 

Bapuni Bindhani proved to be the star of the Odisha team, scoring 19 goals in five matches. Subash Pujari was the second highest Odisha scorer with a total of eight goals to him name.

As many as 20 States and Union Territories participated in the inaugural edition of the championship, which was hosted by Gujarat State Football Association, under the aegis of All India Football Federation. Former Odisha Senior Men team captain Nipendra Kumar Das accompanied the Odisha team as Head Coach.

Beach soccer is a game played barefeet on sand, where both teams field five players each. The matchday squad of each team can have up to 12 players, and rolling substitutions are available. Unlike football or futsal, there are three periods in a beach soccer match, lasting 12 minutes, with an extra three minutes added if the scores are tied.  If a winner is not decided in those three minutes, then the game goes to a penalty shootout.

January 26 (League match): Odisha (Bapuni Bindhani 7, 15, 20, 22, 23, 32; Subash Pujari 17) beat Arunachal Pradesh (Gemo Loyi 12, Bishal Munda 23, Tolum Pinku 26) 7-3.

January 27
(League match): Odisha (Bapuni Bindhani 2, 10, 17; Subash Pujari 13, 26, 26, 31; Md Bilal 15, 28; Loknath Munda 22) beat Dadra & Nagar Haveli & Daman & Diu (Viral Kumar Vassantrau 12-P, Sagar Amit Halpati 24) 10-2.

January 28
(League match): Goa (Satish Kankonkar 4, 6; Latish Kunkolkar 13-P, Shubham Rao Dattarao 28) beat Odisha (Bapuni Bindhani 23, 23-P) 4-2.

January 30
(League match): Odisha (Bapuni Bindhani 3, 22, 27, 35; Subash Pujari 6, 29, Md Bilal 29) beat Karnataka (Mohammed Luqman Shiekhji 32, 33; Mohammed Sufiyan 32) 7-3.

January 31
(QF): Delhi (Satyam Vivek 14, 27; Sandeep 28, Amit Bisht 35, Lalzarmawia 38) drew with Odisha (Bapuni Bindhani 9, 22, 26, 37; Subash Pujari 14) 5-5. Penalty Shoot out: Delhi (Sandeep, Mukul Singh Shoun, Yaman Singh) beat Odisha (Bapuni Bindhani) 3-1.
